Mollie Gerver

I am an Assistant Professor in Political Theory at the University of Essex, and the author of The Ethics and Practice of Refugee Repatriation (Edinburgh University Press). My research focuses on what types of immigration control are justified. For example, I consider whether states act ethically in paying refugees to repatriate, or deporting refugees no longer requiring asylum.

In additional to philosophical research, I have conducted empirical fieldwork in South Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Thailand, interviewing 172 former refugees and migrants who had repatriated from Israel. Based on this data, the majority who returned from Israel to South Sudan were displaced after returning, and at least 5% died within two years.

Prior to working at Essex, I was an Assistant Professor at Newcastle University, and completed my PhD at the London School of Economics in August 2016.
