Neil Thomas Smith

Composer and Postdoctoral Researcher, Maastricht Centre for the Innovation of Classical Music, Maastricht University

Neil T. Smith is a composer and postdoctoral researcher at the Maastricht Centre for the Innovation of Classical Music.

His research focuses on contemporary musical culture with specialisms in new German music, composition, and intersections between music, urbanism and architecture. His articles have appeared in Music&Letters, TEMPO, Contemporary Music Review and the British Journal of Sociology. His monograph on composer Mathias Spahlinger will appear in 2021, published by Intellect.

Neil recently undertook a study with IMPACT Scotland, who are attempting to build a new concert hall in Edinburgh. Forthcoming publications from this research include articles on 'Constructing the Public Concert Hall' and 'Concrete Culture: Materials as a Locus for Cultural Debates in the Planning Hearing of David Chipperfield Architects’ New Concert Hall for Edinburgh'.
