Neil Visalvanich

Lecturer in the School of Government and International Affairs, Durham University

Neil Visalvanich joined Durham University as a Lecturer in Comparative Politics in 2015. He recieved his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in 2014. For the 2014-2015 academic year, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Bucknell Univerisity.

Neil focuses on studying politics in America, and is particularly interested in the politics of campaigns and elections, as well as the influence of racial and ethnic diversity on political institutions, mass political behaviour, and public opinion. Currently, Neil is working on a collaborative data project that seeks to record the racial background of all the candidates who ran for US Congress from 2008-2014, with the purpose of examining candidate strategy, voter response to candidates, and how political parties interact with minority candidates.

In addition, Neil has also been conducting survey experiments to examine the effect of candidate racial background, political information, and how the combination of these two variables influences perceptions of minority candidates. These experiments are to be the basis of a larger book project. Neil is also broadly interested in the study of political behaviour and plans on furthering his collaborative endeavours with scholars in an international context.
