Dr Niels Wouters is a Research Fellow and Digital Media Advisor at the Microsoft Research Centre for Social Natural User Interfaces and Science Gallery Melbourne. He investigates the democratic use of technology in public space and conducts design research to uncover design parameters that stimulate activation, participation and engagement with technology. Niels holds a PhD in Engineering: Architecture from the University of Leuven, an MSc in Architecture and a BSc in Computer Science.

His doctoral thesis, 'Contextualising Media Architecture' (2016), examined the architectural and social qualities of media facades and urban screens.
