Olivia Hellewell

Assistant Professor in Peninsular Spanish and Translation Studies, University of Nottingham

Olivia Hellewell is a translator of contemporary Slovene fiction and Assistant Professor of Peninsular Spanish and Translation Studies at the University of Nottingham, UK. Her research interests include literary translation, and particularly the networks, agents and institutional structures that determine who, and what, we get to read in translation. Her expertise in a less translated language such as Slovene complement teaching expertise in Spanish, which includes a course on Gender, Power and Translation in the Spanish-Speaking World.

In 2020-21, Olivia was Translator in Residence at the British Centre for Literary Translation. Her recent translations include short stories by Ana Svetel for Take Six: Six Balkan Women Writers in Translation (Dedalus, 2023), children's book Adam and His Tuba by Žiga X Gombač (North South, 2023) and Goran Vojnović's multigenerational novel The Fig Tree (Istros Books, 2020).
