Briefly, my University education: BA Art History at Sussex University 1989, MSc Artificial Intelligence at Sussex University. My PhD "Framing Media Transformations" was in some respects an integration of these two interests. The thesis was my attempt to make sense of the rapid flow of technological change in contemporary media spaces applied to what/how we see (visual literacy) and how we engage with texts that are composed of many different types of media (multimodality).
These days my research has been dominated by the rapid development of Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and the design of systems for real-world applications such as immersive displays in Museums and the gamification of aspects of Public Health Promotion (walking and cycling). I am most interested in the impact of these technologies on human experience and our 'sense of space'. I have published research on what I call "augmented space" - which is a more general concept than AR/VR - but helps to shift the research perspective onto a more human and experiential one.
I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
I am a musician and currently play in band called The Flying Squirrels.
