I chair the Steering Committee for the National Environment Science Program Marine Biodiversity Hub. I am an adviser to the Chief Author of the forthcoming national State of Environment Report 2016. I am a Director of Ecotourism Australia, Tangaroa Blue Foundation and the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute - all not-for-profit companies. I am an IUCN Councillor. I co-chaired the Bioregional Advisory Panel of the Commonwealth Marine Reserves Review in 2015, and was a member of the Review's Expert Scientific Panel. I headed Parks Australia for fourteen years, was a senior executive in the oil and gas industry for five, and a Ministerial adviser in federal Parliament for four years. Before that I worked for fifteen years at the ANU Research School of Biological Sciences in plant eco-physiology.
