Professor Peter Cowling is passionate about research in AI and games. Games bring together AI, human-computer interaction, big data analytics, design and art to provide a very rich domain for interdisciplinary research. Research in games is developing ideas and techniques applicable to areas such as healthcare, government and business.

Peter is Director of two large research centres investigating the future of AI, human-computer interaction and other technologies in games and interactive media. The £18 million Digital Creativity Labs (www.digitalcreativity.ac.uk) has over 80 partners and 15 full-time postdoctoral researchers, and the £12 million EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent Games and Game Intelligence (IGGI - www.iggi.org.uk) has over 50 PhD students conducting research in collaboration with with the huge and fast-growing games industry.

Peter is a member of the Department of Computer Science and the York Centre for Complex Systems Analysis (YCCSA) at the University of York. He has also worked on a number of projects to develop IT decision support systems for road maintenance, personnel scheduling, logistics and manufacturing. He has published over 100 papers in leading scientific conferences and journals and gained over £37 million in research funding across 42 projects.
