Peter Gurney is Professor of British Social History at the University of Essex. His research has focused mainly on the relationship between consumption and class formation during the long nineteenth century. More recently, he has been working on an oral history project funded by the Leverhulme Trust investigating the popular memory of conscription in modern Britain.
