Peter John McLoughlin

Lecturer in Politics, Queen's University Belfast

My research background is in Irish history and politics, with particular emphasis on British-Irish relations and the Northern Ireland problem. However, more recent work has drawn upon broader theories of ethnic conflict and conflict resolution, showing how these can be applied to Northern Ireland specifically. I have also conducted research on the role that external actors such as the EU and US government can play in conflict resolution. More recently, I have begun to look at devolution as a means to accommodate national differences in the UK context, but also how the recent referendum on Scottish independence and proposed referendum on UK membership of the EU might affect such efforts.
