Senior Lecturer, Chemistry, University of St Andrews

Petr Kilian is Senior Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of St Andrews. He trained as synthetic chemist in area of Main Group chemistry. His current research focuses on strained organo-element molecules, containing organic backbone decorated with selected main group elements. The energy associated with the molecular strain is utilised to achieve unusual and useful transformations, and to stabilise molecules with structural motifs that are normally highly reactive and hence short-lived.

Kilian’s research group addresses various practical applications, such as spin labels or catalysis through making unusual molecules. At the same time, the research expands our understanding of chemical bonding and develops novel synthetic strategies. You can find more on this group at http://kiliangroup.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/
