Philip Higuera

I am a professor in the Department of Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences at the University of Montana, where I direct the PaleoEcology and Fire Ecology Lab, funded largely from the National Science Foundation and Joint Fire Science Program. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in fire and disturbance ecology, and I advise graduate students and post docs. Work from our lab group spans western North America and has revealed how fire activity varies with climate change in recent decades and the distant past, and how forest ecosystems respond to these changes.

I earned a BA in biology and environmental studies from Middlebury College, and a MS and PhD in forest ecosystem analysis from the University of Washington. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Montana in 2015, I was an assistant professor at the University of Idaho for six years.
