I am a Professor of Modern Literature at the University of East Anglia. I have written many books and essays about a wide range of modernist writers. I have a particular interest in the censorship of modernist literature and ideas of freedom of expression. I wrote about the censorship of James Joyce's 'Ulysses' in my book, 'Obscene Modernism: Literary censorship and experiment 1900-1940'.
