A/Prof Parker is a sociologist by training and has spent many years of teaching and researching in the area of primary health care. Rhian has held academic positions at the University of Queensland, University of Melbourne, Monash University and the Australian National University.

Rhian has been involved in a number of research projects as chief investigator focusing on the role of nurses and nurse practitioners in the primary care setting. Rhian has also undertaken research into Chlamydia screening in primary health care.
