Senior Lecturer / Stomatologist, University of the Western Cape

I qualified as a dentist in 2007 at The University of the Western Cape and hold a masters degree in restorative dentistry and a PhD in Paediatric Dentistry. I spent some years in private practice before I joined the University of the Western Cape in 2014 in Paediatric Dentistry. I expanded my clinical and research portfolio, after my PhD studies and joined Prosthetic Dentistry in November 2019. Additionally, my new portfolio includes the treatment of the special need and geriatric patients for restorative and prosthetic dentistry. I Have a keen interest in research of various dental fields, especially dental materials. I also have an extensive portfolio of national and international articles available in Pubmed, ORCID and Research Gate. My current research focuses on various medical/dental devices to improve patient care by simplifying dental procedures and ensuring repeatability of the performed procedure. I am the co-inventor of the Dental Aerosol Suction Device (DASD) that reduce aerosol generation in the dental surgery.

I lecture extensively outside UWC to the dental fraternity based on a balanced and fair literature review. I am a Key Opinion Leader in Dental Materials for 3M. I completed my PhD on the development and improvement of various glass ionomers to increase the activity of the biomaterial for restorative purposes on tooth structure.

The support I enjoy from my home department members, my wife and international research groups are how I was able to achieve my goals in research. Relaxing with my wife and three dogs on the beach over weekends and regular recurve bow archery, are keen past times.
