Richard Tay is a Fellow of the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, and a Senior Fellow of the Economic Society of Australia. His expertise is in multidisciplinary theory and evidence-based approaches to improving transportation safety, efficiency, accessibility and sustainability.

He currently serves as the editor of 2 journals, associate editor of 5 journals, and editorial board member of 10 journals. He has been invited to speak at many conferences in Canada, USA, UK, Nigeria, Iran, Korea, Hong Kong, China, Bangladesh, Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia. He has been invited regularly to speak and comment on major news media, including the New York Times, The Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, Los Angeles Weekly, Vienna TV, The Australian, The Age, etc. He also has served on the Board of Directors and advisory committee of many research centres, not-for-profit organisations and public trusts, as well as many government panels, committees and task forces in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Korea and Singapore.
