Honorary Professor, Medical Bionics Department, The University of Melbourne

Professor Rob Shepherd commence working in the field of Cochlear Implants (Bionic Ears) in 1975 and has been actively involved in research associated with these and other medical bionic devices until his retirement in 2022. He has published widely, holds several patents and has been associated with four clinical trials. He was the Director of the Bionics Institute (formally the Bionic Ear Institute) from 2006 - 2017, and was appointed the inaugural Head of the Medical Bionics Department, University of Melbourne in 2011. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2017, and became a Member, Order of Australia in 2021 for his contributions to medical research. He lives on Victoria's Surf Coast where he is actively engaged in environmental causes.
