Associate Head of Theatre, The University of Melbourne

Robert Walton is Associate Head of Theatre at The Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. His research interests include contemporary experimental performance practices, specificially immersive and site-responsive performance, theatre and mobile media, and pedagogies of acting and performance-maker (un)training. Robert is a collaborative artist who has created over 30 original works spanning theatre, installation and media art with his companies Reader (2001-05) and Fish & Game (2005-). His practice is primarily concerned with the conception, development and production of new work created through dialogue and play. He is a committed teacher working in the ‘Drama School’/Arts School context of intensive, vocational education. Robert’s core studio practice is as a director in experimental theatre and live art. However throughout his career he has also created interdisciplinary works that are more difficult to categorise including correspondence projects, durational performances, events for small groups or one-to-ones, interactive encounters and work with portable media devices. Robert moved from his position as Associate Head of Performance at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to join VCA in April 2011. He is curating the Festival of New Australian Performance for The XX Commonwealth Games at Tramway in Glasgow 2014.
