I am currently engaged in four research projects. First, since 2010 I have been investigating why and how the Silicon Valley venture capital policy model is adapted as it diffuses, with particular emphasis on the forms venture capital policies take in East Asia. My book on the topic - The Venture Capital State: The Silicon Valley Model in East Asia - is published by Cornell University Press this year. Second, I am investigating East Asian governments' shift from supporting state-owned enterprises and conglomerates, to SMEs and start-ups in the post-East Asian Financial Crisis. Third, I explore the role of venture capital in China's sustainable economic development. Fourth, I am working with a team at King's College London to establish a framework for assessing the 'external rate of return' of business activity across broadly-defined economic and social parameters.
