Lecturer in Finance, La Trobe University

Dr Mary Ma joined La Trobe University as a Lecturer in Finance in 2019. She completed her PhD degree in 2018 at Massey University in New Zealand. Her research focuses on market microstructure, market liquidity, climate risk, and return predictability. Mary’s research work has been published in internationally recognised journals, including the Journal of Financial Markets (ABDC A*), the British Journal of Management (ABDC A), the Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions & Money (ABDC A), the International Review of Financial Analysis (ABDC A), and the Pacific-Basin Finance Journal (ABDC A). She is an editorial board member of Global Finance Journal (ABDC A), and has been a referee for various ABDC-ranked SSCI journals. Her research has also received coverage in media outlets, such as The Conversation (theconversation.com), QuantPedia (quantpedia.com), CXO Advisory Group (cxoadvisory.com), and Chief Investment Officer (ai-CIO.com).

Mary is the recipient of a number of competitive research grants, such as the AFAANZ Mid-Career Researcher Grant and the La Trobe ASSC Research Start-up Grant. Mary has won several best paper awards, including the CFA ARX Best Paper Award, the INFINZ Best Paper Prize for Investments, NZX Research Report of the Year Award, and the Boyle, Lally, and Rose Best Paper Prize. She has also had her research work accepted by top-quality finance conferences, such as the FMA Asia Pacific Conference, and the Australasian Finance and Banking Conference. In addition, Mary has successfully supervised PhD and undergraduate research students to completion. Her teaching areas include market risk management, applied econometrics, and investment analysis.
