Teaching and Learning Specialist, University of the Western Cape

Dr. Samuel Lundie is a teaching and learning specialist and senior lecturer in the Faculty of Dentistry. His main responsibilities are curriculum development and implementation, development of academics as teachers, student learning development and support and research. Samuel holds a PhD in curriculum development, evaluation and innovation from NWU. He also obtained a master's degree in teaching and learning and received cum laude and best student award from the University of Pretoria.

Previously Samuel was the HOD and programme leader of Short Learning Programmes at the NWU responsible for the development, management and delivery of short learning programmes. He is also the founder of Assidere Training Institute. The NWU awarded him the NWU Institutional award for teaching excellence.

Samuel's experience in the higher education field is punctuated by the development and facilitation of several credit bearing short courses for the professional development of lecturers and in-service teachers across South Africa. One of the several credit bearing short courses (accredited assessor) was instituted as a compulsory module for B.Ed., PGCE students at the NWU as well Stellenbosch University and CPUT.

Samuel is currently the convener of PG Dip module AHE (Assessment in Higher Education) and is involved in curriculum transformation and policy development at ministerial level. He is also involved in several curriculum review teams responsible for the quality assurance and accreditation of programmes on institutional and national level. He is a panel member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

As a researcher he is the co-author of a book titled Quality assessment for South African Teachers and published several handbooks on assessment, moderation and mentorship. He is a co-author of the UWC Curriculum Transformation and Renewal Policy, Flexible Learning and Teaching Policy (2021) as well as the UWC Assessment Policy (2021).

Samuel believes that the key to transforming teaching and learning lies in empowering teachers through curriculum development.
