PhD in machine ethics, University of Canterbury

Professionally, I spent 17 years working in software engineering for organisations such as British Telecom, Telstra Australia, Fitch Ratings, James Cook University and Lumata. Academically, I have returned to university to do a doctoral thesis on machine ethics. Entitled "Exploratory Moral Code: Formalizing Normative Decisions Using Non-Modal Deontic Logic and Tiered Utility" my PhD was awarded in 2019. I have published a research monograph entitled "Ethics and Security Automata: Policy and Technical Challenges of the Robotic Use of Force" and co-authored an easy to read book entitled "An Introduction to Ethics in Robotics and AI" which is available as a free open access download from Springer.
