Shams Pathan is an Associate Professor of Finance, Postgraduate Course Coordinator and director of Master of Finance program at the School of Economics, Finance, and Property in the Curtin University, Australia. His past academic positions include Senior Lecturer at The University of Queensland, Assistant Professor at Bond University, and Lecturer at the Asian University of Bangladesh. Previously, he held the prestigious ARC DECRA fellowship (2013-2016) at The University of Queensland. He received his Ph.D. in finance from Monash University, M.Sc. (with distinction) in finance from University of Strathclyde, M.Com and B.Com (Hons) (with merits) in finance/banking from University of Dhaka. Over the past 20 years as an academic across three nations (Australia, UK, and Bangladesh), Shams has strongly advocated community advancement both at local and international levels through his demonstrated strategic leadership to create and collaborate with high performance, multi-disciplinary and international research, teaching, and engagement teams.
Shams is internationally well recognised for his impactful research on issues related to board governance vis-à-vis CEO power, pay gap (CEO, gender), institutional shareholders monitoring, say-on-pay, and bank governance. Shams fondest career achievement is the receipt of the prestigious 2013 ARC Discover Early Career Research Award in three divisions (business, economics, and law) which enable five prominent publications among other significant research engagements. He has published over 15 papers in leading scholarly journals including Journal of Banking and Finance [ABDC rank A*]. Shams’ research attracted attentions from influential media outlets such as The Economists, Financial Times Deutschland. His works have also received several prestigious distinctions including the 2016 CNMV Best Paper on Regulation from XXIV Spanish Finance Forum, the leading professional association of finance academics in Spain.
