Simon has a specific interest in working with marginalised young people and their families, particularly in secondary schools. Drawing on Freire's (1972; 2005) liberation education his research and writing interests focus on presenting young people's and community members’ voices and their experiences and using this as a starting point for social and personal development and transformation. He has recently co-developed and is now delivering some innovative CPD, which re-engages educationally disengaged students with their learning in local schools. He is also currently training three of his former excluded students and their parents as researchers and mentors to support current excluded students and their parents re-engage education
