Senior Lecturer in Linguistics, Manchester Metropolitan University

I am a linguist specializing in (critical) discourse analysis. My current research is in the area of language and health/clinical communication with a special interest in pain communication. In particular, I am interested in pain associated with taboo issues (such as menstruation), invisible conditions and naturalised/normalised pain. I also explore intercultural aspects of health communication, not only cross languages (Spanish/English) but also exploring cultural aspects that may impair communication.

My current project is called the Language of Endometriosis. It investigates the ways in which endometriosis is discussed, explained and talked about and, in particular, how pain is described so as to be able to inform communication practices https://thelanguageofendometriosis.com/. I also the funded the International Organisation for the Study of Language and Culture in Health Communication: www.lachcom.com working with colleagues in Latin America.
