Stephen Onakuse's research areas include the use of indigenous knowledge within communities as focal point of small-scale production interventions; building local capacities and shared knowledge that help sustain food security and livelihoods outcomes; socio-economic and community analysis; understanding the role of institutions in economic development and the processes of institutional change; environment and its impact on food security and the impact of corruption on development.

Stephen is also elected president of Agrinatura. Agrinatura is the European Alliance on Agricultural knowledge for Development, an entity established jointly by European Research and Education organizations. Agrinatura members are prestigious European universities and research organizations with vast experience in research dealing with tropical and subtropical agriculture, organic agriculture, forestry, food security and human nutrition, veterinary medicine, fisheries, and related environmental sciences.
