Associate Professor, The University of Queensland

Steven Pratt is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering at The University of Queensland, where he leads research in the biomaterials and materials recycling space, with international profile in polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bioplastics; he has partnered with Anoxkaldnes (Sweden) on the production of PHA from wastewater, collaborated with Tsinghua University (China) on the development of technology for converting methane to PHA; and worked with Norske Skog (Australia) on the commercialization of wood-PHA biocomposites.

He co-founded UQ Plastics. And he is now Director of the new ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre in Bioplastics and Biocomposites.

He has authored over 100 scientific papers on topics related to environmental engineering, with his major contribution to the field of environmental biotechnology being the invention of the TOGA® Sensor for examination and control of biotech/bioprocess systems. Widespread interest in TOGA® led to an agreement between Massey University and Scion for the commercialisation of the technology.
