Susan Lawrence

Susan Lawrence is a professor of archaeology in the Department of Archaeology and History at La Trobe University. Originally from Canada, she studied at the University of Calgary before being awarded a PhD from La Trobe University in 1996. Susan's first academic position was at Flinders University where she worked 1992-1996. in 1996 she moved to La Trobe where she was Head of Department from 2015-2017. Susan is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Society of Antiquaries of London.

Susan's current research spans industrial archaeology and environmental history, with an emphasis on measuring the human and environmental impacts of settler colonisation in Australia. She has had a long-standing interest in the archaeology of the gold rush. Past research includes comparative colonial studies, gender, and urban archaeology. She is the author of 8 books and more than 70 articles.

Susan has guest edited the journals Australasian Historical Archaeology and Historical Archaeology, was president of the Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology 2004-2007 and convenes the Victorian Archaeology Colloquium. She is a member of the Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage Committee for the Heritage Council of Victoria.
