Postdoctoral Researcher, School of Biology, University of St Andrews

Thomas is a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of prof. Kevin Laland at the University of St Andrews. His research is financed by a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. He studies how migratory animals learn when and where to go, and how this affects their ecology. Specifically, he combines empirical studies with simulation models to infer how traditions help or hinder migratory birds to respond to changing environments, for example by climate change.
Thomas received a PhD from the University in Groningen in the Netherlands, which was on the foraging ecology of shorebirds in Mauritania. He wrote a book with prof. Theunis Piersma, 'De Ontsnapping van de Natuur', which is shortlisted for the Jan Wolkers Prize for best Dutch nature book of 2019. Thomas also writes for De Correspondent, an online platform for unbreaking news.
