Tom Salter works as a musician, as a consultant on resource governance in the Great Lakes Region and also maintains a long term connection with the Centre for African Studies at Edinburgh University. PhD 'Rumba: From Congo to Cape Town. 2003-2007' He has published an article based on that research ‘Being Modern Does Not Mean Being Western’: Congolese Popular Music 1945-2000 in Critical African Studies Vol. 3 Issue 5, 2011.
