Dr. Tim van Gelder is a Melbourne Enterprise Fellow in the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne. He is currently a Principal Investigator in the SWARM Project, a major research effort aimed at developing a new cloud platform for analytical reasoning in intelligence analysis.
He is a cognitive scientist and applied epistemologist specialising in techniques for developing clarity and rational consensus around complex issues. He has a BA from the University of Melbourne, a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, and taught at Indiana University before returning to Australia on an ARC QEII Fellowship. In 2001 he was awarded an Australian Museum Eureka prize for his work in critical thinking.
His academic research has developed from work in the philosophical foundations of cognitive science to critical thinking education, intelligence augmentation, and deliberative democracy.
