Trudi E. Jacobson is one of just two practicing Distinguished Librarians in the State University of New York system (the other three are retired). Her area of expertise is in the realm of information literacy and metaliteracy. She has written extensively in this area, including books and articles, and has also co-edited a series of books with Thomas P. Mackey. Their most recent books are Metaliteracy: Reinventing Information Literacy to Empower Learners (2014) and their co-edited Metaliteracy in Practice (forthcoming). She has written about motivating students and also team-based learning in connection with information literacy.

She has enjoyed exploring new modes of teaching, including both C-MOOCs and X-MOOCs, and also digital badging. From 2013-January 2015, she co-chaired the Association of College and Research Libraries' Task Force that wrote the new Information Literacy Framework for Higher Education.
