Reader in German, Aston University

I joined Aston as a Lecturer in German in 1999. My research interest is mainly in contemporary Austrian and German literature with a specific focus on cultural anthropology, extremist aesthetics and popular culture. I am the author of more than ten monographs, comprising major academic studies as well as general introductions in addition roughly 50 journal articles and book chapters.

Apart from my academic publication activity, I am also contributing to national newspapers in the German-speaking world where I have published some 600 book reviews, literary essays and album reviews. I was elected as a jury member for the ORF Bestenliste in 2004.

My forthcoming book projects include an English language introduction the the works of my PhD supervisor W.G. Sebald, an essay collection on extremist poetics in 20th century Austrian literature and a cultural history of the band Kraftwerk. I organised the first international conference on Kraftwerk, which took place in January 2015.
