Varuna De Silva

Varuna is a senior researcher with 7+ years of post-doctoral experience both in the academia and in the industry in the area of multimedia data modelling and processing. Produced international award winning research outputs in video data compression and is the author of a popular perception prediction model for stereoscopic video. Has a significant publication track record, which includes 12 IEEE Transaction papers and more than 30 conference publications, which has attracted more than 600 citations to date.

During the time spent in the industry, was the lead inventor of an algorithm for CMOS image sensor data processing, which was recently granted a US patent, and developed methods for ambient sensor data processing on smart devices, which is adapted in nearly 1Bn devices in the world at the moment.

His current research interests are in perception and artificial intelligence based control systems of autonomous vehicles utilizing multi-modal sensor data streams, and application of data science in sports analytics. Starting from February 2018, he is acting as an associate editor of IEEE Access. Professional affiliations: Member of IET, Fellow of Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of Royal Statistical society.
