Yagana Bukar is a professor of geography in the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, University of Maiduguri, Nigeria.

Yagana attended Central Primary School Bama and proceeded to Federal Government Girl’s College Owerri Imo State. She obtained a BSc in geography from the University of Maiduguri as well as an MSc and PhD from the same institution. Yagana began her working career with Umar ibn Ibrahim El-Kanemi College of Education, Science and Technology Bama. She has been a lecturer and a researcher with the University of Maiduguri since 2005.

Yagana has participated in several research studies and published widely in national and international academic fields. Coming from an area affected by the Boko Haram crisis, and having experienced the violence, she is passionately involved in studies on various aspects of it. She is one of the researchers of the 2016 International Alert/Unicef Report Bad Blood, which studied survivors of sexual violence associated with Boko Haram.

She is currently engaged in collaborative research with the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom on the nexus between Islamic education and insurgency by Boko Haram in north-east Nigeria.

She enjoys cooking, gardening and travelling.
