Rip currents cause more fatalities than other natural threats

Rip currents are more dangerous to life than bushfires, cyclones, shark attacks and floods.

Researchers have found that rip currents caused 21 confirmed deaths compared with 5.9 for bushfires, 4.3 for floods, 7.5 for cyclones and 1 per year for sharks

Rip currents are strong, narrow currents that can carry a swimmer a great distance offshore with ease.
