The Māori Health Authority is gone, but a law remains that puts primary focus on reducing health inequities – meaning the government may struggle to bridge the gap between rhetoric and policy priority.
The coalition has made good on pledges to repeal, reduce or reverse the previous government’s policies. But the real test will be paying for its own policies and staying stable in the process.
There is no express right to health in New Zealand law. But international agreements protecting Indigenous rights to health and wellbeing set the standard New Zealand should follow.
