Measurements recorded over 135 years ago during an expedition of the HMS Challenger has provided researchers with evidence of human-produced global warming.
Researchers also found the thermal expansion of sea water caused by this global warming contributed to around 40% of the total sea level rise seen in tide gauges from 1873 to 1955.
By using modern climate models and observations, scientists are now able to get a picture of how the world’s oceans have changed since the HMS voyage.
