Wallaby immune system mystery revealed

Some marsupials have two immune system organs to boost immune defences while they are growing in the pouch, research from the University of Sydney has found.

The Tammar Wallaby was analysed using DNA sequencing technology, which uncovered the revelation. Other mammals only possess one thymus and until now it was not known why some animals had two.

The thymuses are identical and produce white blood cells that protect mammals from infection.
