Institut Pertanian Bogor didirikan pada 1 September 1963 dan bertujuan menjadi perguruan tinggi kelas dunia yang memiliki kompetensi dalam bidang pertanian, biosains, dan berbagai bidang yang terkait guna memperkuat ketahanan pangan, bioenergi, penciptaan lapangan kerja, pengentasan kemiskinan, dan menjaga lingkungan hidup.
