Extraordinary Lecturer, University of Pretoria

Dr Adem K Abebe is an expert in governance, comparative constitutional design, and human rights and democratization in Africa. He currently serves as Assistant Professor (part time) at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, Extraordinary Lecturer at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, and editor of ConstitutionNet, an online platform of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance publishing original analysis and providing regular updates on constitutional reform processes worldwide. Dr Abebe is a member of the Executive Committee of the African Network of Constitutional Lawyers, which aims at bringing together experts from around Africa to discuss and develop policy recommendations on topical constitutional and governance issues in Africa. He has consulted with a number of organizations, including the African Union, including on a project on ‘Revisiting the African Union Legal Framework on Unconstitutional Changes of Government’ (2018).

Dr Abebe has published a number of peer reviewed articles and book chapters on issues touching on democracy, human rights and constitutionalism in Africa. In addition, he serves as editor of the African Journal on Comparative Constitutional Law, and a reviewer to the prestigious African Human Rights Law Journal and the International Journal of Constitutional Law.
