I am a Research Fellow at both the Third Sector Research Centre and the Health Services Management Centre at the University of Birmingham. I have extensive experience of research in and on voluntary action, including being co-investigator on two recent studies funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. Prior to joining the University of Birmingham, I was the Director of the Institute for Volunteering Research, at Volunteering England. I am co-author of Volunteering and Society in the 21st Century (2010, Palgrave Macmillan) and numerous book chapters, reports and articles on different aspects of voluntary action. My PhD explored issues of participation, power and exclusion in rural community development.
