Director, Center for International Media Law and Policy Studies, Indiana University

My research focuses on legal issues raised by newsgathering practices and techniques, specifically issues raised by the relationships between reporters and sources. Recent work has focused on problems for journalists caused by weakening of the federal journalist’s privilege and efforts to pass a national shield law in Congress.

My other research interests include indecency legislation, the legal liability of the media for intrusive newsgathering, libel, privacy, and general First Amendment protections for expression.
