Professor of Sociology, Memorial University of Newfoundland

I have background in two disciplines, economics (Habilitation received in 2012 from the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow) and sociology (PhD received in 2001 from EHESS in Paris). My areas of interest include research methods, with specific focus on mixed research methods and content analysis, critical sociology, and institutional theory. I authored a number of monographs: Building Ukraine From Within: A Sociological, Institutional and Economic Analysis of a Nation-State in the Making (Ibidem/Columbia University Press, 2018), The Invisible Hand of Power: An Economic Theory of Gatekeeping (Routledge, 2015), Market as a Weapon: The Socio-Economic Machinery of Dominance in Russia (Transaction, 2011) and Organized Crime, Prison and Post-Soviet Societies (Ashgate, 2003) - most of them translated in other languages, including French and Russian. My Op-Ed commentaries were published in The Star (Toronto), the Huffington Post, The Telegram (St. John's) and Rabble.ca.
