I am a professor of sociology and an interdisciplinary scholar specializing in penal history. My central research focus is understanding how prisons became institutionalized in the American penal landscape. My first book was The Deviant Prison (Cambridge University Press), a history of the distinctive Philadelphia prison, Eastern State Penitentiary (1829-1913).
