Research Officer/Vaccinologist, Vaccines For Africa Initiative, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town

Dr. Benjamin Kagina is a Research Officer/Vaccinologist at VACFA. Benjamin has a MSc. Degree in Epidemiology (from the Jomo Kenyatta University (JKUAT, Kenya) and a PhD in Clinical Sciences & Immunology (from the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa). Currently, Benjamin's role is to lead the day to day operations of the group as well as the strategic growth of VACFA. Benjamin works closely with Dr. Rudzani Muloiwa and Prof. Gregory Hussey.

Most of Benjamin's projects have a training component to allow postgraduate students (MPH) to develop dissertation topic within the research projects. Ongoing systematic review research projects under Benjamin's leadership includes:

1) Mass immunization campaigns as strategies to improve vaccine coverage in low and middle income countries;

2) Interventions to improve vaccine-induced immunity among HIV-infected persons;

3) Epidemiology of Hepatitis A Virus in Africa;

4) Understanding vaccine hesitancy in Africa

Benjamin is also interested in using web analytics to improve presentation and communication of vaccines' information to the public.

Benjamin is a co-convener of the Annual African Vaccinology Course that is conducted by VACFA. He is involved in teaching and supervision of postgraduate students as well as in the development of the vaccinology materials for both academic and non-academic training.
