NHMRC Emerging Leader Research Fellow, University of Sydney

Dr Brooke Nickel (BSc Hons, MIPH, PhD) is a NHMRC Emerging Leader Research Fellow in The University of Sydney School of Public Health. Her research focuses on understanding the psychosocial impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment, and how to improve cancer communication and decision making. Her world-first research which examined how different labels for low risk thyroid cancer impacts treatment decision making and patient outcomes including quality of life has been published in high impact journals in the field including Thyroid, JAMA Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, and The BMJ. This work has re-opened the discussion and debate about the labelling and the impact of low risk cancer diagnoses internationally.
