Keywords: Literacy Education, YA Literature, Identity, Place & Space, Belonging

Caroline Hamilton is a first-year doctoral student in the department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia. She holds a BA in English Language and Literature from Smith College and an MA in Education from Stanford University. Teaching fourth grade for three years in California public schools led her to consider how students might draw on literary conceptions of physical, cultural, and social belonging in support of their own narratives and modes of self-expression, including poetic, visual, and multimedia formats. To this end, she is most interested in examining contemporary upper middle grade and young adult fiction, and the ways in which young readers engage with those texts.
