Chris began his career as a fighter and test pilot in the Canadian military. He joined Canada's astronaut program in 1992, and subsequently worked on the Russian space station Mir (which was de-orbited in 2001), the US Space Shuttle program, and the International Space Station. In 2013 he was the Commander of Expedition 35 to the ISS, before retiring to take up an adjunct position at the University of Waterloo.

Colonel Hadfield will be in Australia for National Science Week, and will also be participating in the Melbourne Writers Festival. His book An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth was published last year.
