During her doctoral training at The George Institute for International Health, she developed an interest in using large epidemiological datasets to study global health issues. Her doctoral and postdoctoral training were funded by both an NHMRC Public Health Postgraduate Scholarship and Postdoctoral Training Fellowship.

Crystal has engaged herself in a broad range of projects, from molecular biology to public health epidemiology. Her research interest lies in obesity and diabetes epidemiology, which she has been studying since 2005. She began epidemiological research in obesity focusing on adult populations in the Asia-Pacific region, a growing problem in Asian countries. Her current research has greater emphasis on diabetes in adult populations around the world.
